The Bahamas and the Paradise Outer Islands, Fantastic offers for 2011/2012

Lee Harrison, owner and director of Malvern World Travel Visited the Bahamas on an educational trip in conjunction with UK specialist Tour Operator BAHAMAS FLAVOUR and THE BAHAMAS TOURIST BOARD.

Scattered like precious jewels over 1,500 square miles of clear tropical seas, at the top of the Caribbean, the chain of 700 islands, uninhabited cays and large rocks that make up The Bahamas covers just 5,382 square miles of land. Formed mainly of flat coral, with just a few gently rounded hills, the highest point in the entire archipelago is just 206 ft. But despite this shared topography, the character of each of the 16 main islands is as individual as the 300,000 people who live there. And as unique as the holiday you'll enjoy here

The Bahamas are also easy to get to from the UK. British Airways flies from London to Nassau airport (Sir Lynden Pindling International - NAS) six times a week, on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.Schedule changes can occur so best to check with us first!

The direct flight takes nine hours, but if you want to combine your trip with a stay in the USA, or fly into a different Bahamian island, you can head for American cities such as Miami, Orlando, Atlanta and New York. There are approximately 57 airports throughout The Bahamas, including three international airports (on Nassau/Paradise Island, Grand Bahama Island, and the Exumas). Twenty-four of these airports are official ports of entry to The Islands of the Bahamas.

There is so much diversity to the Bahamas and It's well worth combining The Outer Islands with the more well known Islands of New Providence or Grand Bahama Island to escape from your everyday life.

Island Hopping

Non-stop adventures in paradise. There’s something so romantic and carefree about island hopping, and with 15 main paradise islands and hundreds of cays, you’re in one of the best places in the world for it. The hops can be small day trips from an island base or big leaps from one island chain to another – there are no rules!

Suggested itineraries

The phrase ‘island hopping’ is a fabulous one – conjuring up everything that’s great about a carefree holiday,The Bahamas’ islands are extremely accessible. There are few archipelagos in the world where you can immerse yourself in so many exquisitely different paradises at the drop of an anchor. You’re the boss… The Bahamas are your playground.

Why not dip into the vibrant Nassau and Paradise Island, for some boutique shopping (every bit as good as Florida), and Bahamas-style cool bars, clubs, casinos and water sports. Then perhaps hop to somewhere quieter. Within two and a half hours – and countless incredible vistas - on a fast ferry, you’ll be transported magically to the small, quaint, relaxed Harbour Island where the residents welcome you as one of their own - and your watch needs resetting to ‘island time’. It’s not the same as the fast pace of places like Florida – Bahamas visitors are often amazed to find time does seem to move more slowly! From here it’s a tiny boat hop of a few minutes over to Eleuthera, with its fascinating history of settlers and pink sand beaches - not to mention caves to explore.

Feel you’ve done enough lazing for a while? Then it’s time for a bit of action. Luckily for you, the world-renowned game fishing destination of Bimini is just a short ferry ride away. Experience the hunt for blue marlin and follow in Hemingway’s footsteps as you hold out for ‘The Big One!’

And surely it would be rude not to take a boat over to The Exumas, to sample their myriad dreamy idyllic cays and wander inland to spot exotic wildlife such as the pre-historic-looking Bahamian Iguana. Bahamas islands are known for their wildlife along with their spectacular scenery.

…What’s that? You’ve just heard that there’s a Junkanoo party on San Salvador at the weekend? Let’s get on the ferry and go! In The Bahamas, once you start to hop, you won’t want to stop.

Feeling inspired to explore The Bahamas?

Diving

From awesome walls, spectacular reefs and shipwrecks to a cornucopia of fish, Diving in the Bahamas has it all...

Beaches

The Bahamas is synonymous with them for good reason – there’s an eye-opening vista around every corner!

Golf

From PGA courses designed by Greg Norman to the world’s first tropical Scottish-style links, The Bahamas are a golfer’s dream.

Fishing

Blue marlin tearing into the depths with your line or silver flashes of bonefish zipping across sandy flats, the thrills never stop.

Bahamian stories

The Bahamas wouldn’t be so special if it weren’t for its magical people. The characters you’ll meet will truly make your trip.

Sailing and boating

Perfect weather, countless picturesque moorings and 700 heavenly islands and cays to explore make getting out on the water a must do.

Weddings & Honeymoons

Getting married in The Bahamas will be nothing short of picture perfect.

Island Hopping

Island hop in paradise? You choose your pace, every day’s an adventure!

Water activities

Enjoy the warm azure seas of The Bahamas while Kayaking, swimming, snorkelling and more...

At the west end of New Providence lays an exquisite hideaway. A Stone's Throw Away is perched on one of the highest elevations by the coast. The scenery boasts the best of the island's natural wonders. The property was built 7 years ago to echo the traditions of an old Bahamian home: wood floors and wood ceilings, louvered shutters and a large wrap around porch bring the visitors back to a quieter time long ago when the music of the islands could be heard in the whispers of the trade winds.

The pool area stands high above Gambier village and other settlements of West New Providence. Unless you decide to engage in one of the numerous activities Nassau has to offer you will probably decide to rest on our quiet grounds. In the pool, the bench carved under the waterfall is the perfect location for you to enjoy a tropical drink. Lee Harrison of Select World Travel comments " I Was pleasently surprised by the Viva Fortuna during my Visit, again I would not raise clients exectations, and if clients realise that this is not a 4 or 5 star Property with fine dining and Cuisine, then like myself they should be pleasently surprised and at 3 star levels they should get value for money and not be disappointed. The Reception area was bright and airy and the grounds were nicely laid out. With lots of activities on offer and a great Beach on the doorstep. Lots of Supervised activities for Children of all ages and live entertainment with theme nights parties and Dinners, Local cooking classes and a 5 star Padi dive center. The Restaurant and Bar areas were Colourful and Bright. The Rooms are fairly basic but then remember they are 3 and not 5 star category. There seemed to be a nice ambience around the property and the staff genuinely friendly"

CYPRUS, Culture,Nature and Gastronomy, Explore off the beaten track and Discover a wonderful friendly Island

Lee Harrison, Owner and Director of Select World Travel, recently travelled to Cyprus as guests of the Cyprus Tourism Organisation and Sunvil Holidays to discover the Culture / Nature and Gastronomy of the Island, and to see how our guests can help to protect and enhance the environment, improving the well-being of destination communities and at the same time enriching the tourism experience, now and in the future. Lee and Hilary, Owners of Select World Travel spent their Honeymoon in Cyprus in Feb 1988, and so it was interesting to see how much has changed since our last visit.

We arrived at the newly opened Airport at Larnaca and within 30 minutes arrived at TOCHNI Village part of the Cyprus villages traditional houses that Sunvil offer. An ideal base as a Two Centre holiday. There are plenty of activities such as Horse riding,Cycling on professional mountain or race bikes, hiking or jogging on specially marked nature trails, massage, treatments, sauna,Jacuzzi and steam baths. The Tochni Village overlooks the lovely village square of Tochni and Governors Beach is only 5 Minutes away. A Car is included and most of the major Sights on the Island can be reached within 30 to 60 minutes. The Meze and food at Tochni Tavern is highly recommended.

THE TOCHNI TAVERN AND DANAE APARTMENTS

On Day 2 we left for the Troodos mountains and on the way to the delightful village of Kakopetria we stopped to visit the UNESCO site and Byzantine Church of Agios Nicolaos tis Stegis, a unique building that has two roofs covering 5 Byzantine Domes that are only visible from inside the church.

We had a spectacular lunch at the LINOS TAVERN in Kakopetria which also has accommodation featured by Sunvil. Linos Inn is in fact a complex of old houses that has been restored and transformed under the regulations of the Cyprus Tourism Organisation within the framework of Agrotourism, so as to establish a superb homely environment offering a traditional experience that can be truly enjoyed by everyone. The natural environment, the historical monuments, the entertainment places, the night clubs, the swimming pool, the stadium, the market and the short distances to all sites of interest in the area, KAKOPETRIA is an ideal place to stay for a week or to combine as an Ideal 2 Centre Holiday combining Traditional Villages with a Beach stay.

Kakopetria is also the right place to enjoy long walks on a scenic background and for developing your inspirations in photography or painting. Kakopetria is only 50km from Nicosia the capital, 50km from Limassol the 2nd largest city in Cyprus, 30km from Kykkos Monastery and 15km from Mt. Olympus, the highest peak of Troodos with it's skiing centre in the Winter months

In the afternoon we drove to AGROS Village. Named as best tourism and intangible heritage destination in Cyprus. We visited three small Independent family owned local premises, Nikis sweets, Kafkalias smoked meats and Tsolakis rosewater. The Tsolakis family cultivates roses, and if holidaying late in April or early in May, guests are invited to help with the harvesting of the Rose petals. They are used to make, Soaps,Candles, health products, Rose Liquer and also Rose Brandy. As you can imagine, the smell is divine.

We then went to Platres high in the Troodos mountains. In February you can throw snowballs and Ski and then go and Sunbathe in bright sunshine within a half hours drive all on the same day.Platres is an ideal place to stay for at least two or three days with some great walking trails to follow, nature walks.Waterfalls, traditional houses, horse riding, cycling and mountain biking. Best times to visit are in the spring and Autumn. The New Helvetia Hotel and Forest Park Hotel featured by Sunvil are ideal places to have a Two or three Centre Holiday combined with the Ideal Fishing Village and Beach resorts of Polis and Latchi. Or the much busier resort of Pafos

On Day 3 unfortunatly the weather had changed for the first time this year just as we had said good bye to our minibus and driver and started to walk the 4km Kaleidonia nature trail. Wearing Courduroy Trousers turned out to be not a sensible idea and after walking 4kms it felt like I had been in a bath for half an hour still wearing them. The Trail however was beautiful and to see the Kaledonia Waterfall in spring time I imagine would be wonderful. We had to cancel our visit to the Pilavakion pottery museum and were very grateful to the Pantelli Hotel who allowed us to get changed into something drier and provided Hot chocolate to every-one.

At lunch time we visited the ZENON Winery in OMOD-HOS Village and soon the mornings wet adventure was soon forgotten. The Silver Award Winning Cabernet Sauvignon was especially good as was The Dry White Wine and it’s well worth buying a bottle or two.

After our tour of the Zenon Winery,it was time to have lunch at Stou Kir Yianni tavern in OMODHOS and had probably the nicest meal of the trip so far ,with plenty of Stavros’s home made wine that was excellent and it seemed that the Mezes would not stop coming.

On the way to Limmasol, known as Lemesos in Cyprus,we stopped off and visited the Medieval Castle .

We then checked into the luxurios FOUR SEASONS HOTEL in Limassol, for our two night stay.On the edge of the Amathus area, just outside the cosmopolitan town of Limassol lies the prestigious Four Seasons Hotel. Independently owned and operated the luxury and sophistication, are the distinguishing marks of this ‘Regal’ establishment. Spoilt by the surroundings and a warm atmosphere, you will be lured back again and again. Excellent service and facilities to the very highest of standards will ensure that The Four Seasons will leave you revitalised and relaxed. The Four Seasons is a very 'Homely' Hotel, With 4 restaurants to choose from the hotel provides the ultimate in gourmet dining.

The Hotel had been lavishly decorated to celebrate the Christmas and New year period, and from the front of the Hotel every balcony had it’s own Christmas tree.Scenes of Christmas With a Giant Christmas Tree dominated the Lobby and Snow Scenes with Polar Bears looked very picturesque. In The main bar there is an amazing chandelier made of pearls

On Day 4 we had a presentation from the president of Cyprus sustainable tourism initiative and then left to drive to the Village of ANOGYRA. We visited a delightful family business where Halloumi cheese is produced called Anoirkatiko. The Goats are allowed to roam freely with Chickens,Turkeys and the family pet Alsation was lazing uner a Carob Tree.

In the centre of Anogyra we visited the PASTELLI and CAROB Museum. Carobs have seeds that are unique in that they all weigh exactly the same and were used to measure Gold. The Word Carat used to measure Gold, derives from the Carob bean. We were given a display of how Carob toffee is made and that the Carob bean is a much healthier substitute for Cocoa. I bought a bottle of Carob syrup at a 10th of the price that you would pay in the UK.

A short drive from Anogyra found us visiting OLEASTRO OLIVE PARK and we watched the grinding of the Olives using mill-stones. After a fabulous fish meze lunch at YIALOS TAVERN in Pissouri, we visited the Kourion Ancient City Kingdom and amphi-theatre. We stayed at the Maritim Grand Hotel in Hannover and found that this was an ideal base and very comfortable hotel, with only a 5 Minute walk to visit the Three different Christmas markets that Hannover offered. Most Christmas markets start in the last week of November and run through to Christmas Eve or a day or two before. They usually open every day from 10am to anytime between 6pm and 9pm. Most shops in German towns and cities now also open on Saturdays until 8pm. The markets have developed their own unique character influenced by setting and regional traditions.

DERTOUR and Select World Travel offers both mid week and weekend breaks to Berlin, Braunschweig, Celle, Cologne, Dresden, Frankfurt, Goslar, Göttingen, Hamburg, Hamlin, Hanover, Hildesheim, Leipzig, Lüneburg, Munich, Nuremberg, Rothenburg, Wiesbaden, and Wolfenbüttel along with short breaks to the cities of Berchtesgaden, Garmisch, Kobern, Munich and Schenkenzell.

Berlin

With well over 50 Christmas markets and advent bazaars every year, Berlin features prominently on Germany’s calendar of Yuletide events. One of the most popular markets is situated next to Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church amidst the bustle of shoppers on the high street between the Kurfüstendamm and Tauentzien. Tempted by the seasonal aroma of mulled wine and baked cinnamon stars, visitors are drawn to more than 100 handicraft stalls, refreshment stands and amusements at the market.

Here, they are sure to find the right Christmas gifts amongst the yuletide decorations, ornaments, toys and pretty accessories on sale. Performing on stage at the Weltbrunnen fountain every weekend during advent will be trumpet ensembles, children’s choirs, jazz and Dixie players. In this western part of the city centre, the air around the memorial church will be filled with the sounds and smells of Berlin’s Christmas market.

Dresden

The market in Dresden was first mentioned in history in 1434 and it is locally known as the “Striezelmarkt”. The name comes from the local food speciality “Striezel” or “Stollen,” a type of bread-like sweetcake made around Christmas time. Bakers began baking Stollen in the 16th century and would give one or two 36-pound cakes to the local prince at Christmas time. These cakes were carried ceremoniously to the castle and cut by a knife over five feet long, a tradition that has been re-enacted since 1994, when the city introduced its annual Stollen festival. During the festival, a gigantic Stollen is baked that weighs around at 3,500 kg and it is divided up to feed people from throughout the area. This year’s Stollen festival will take place on December 7. Also found at the Dresden Christmas Market is the world’s largest Christmas pyramid which at 14 meters high, towers above the market and features 42 different wooden figurines.Call 01684 577007 to reserve your short break to visit the Christmas Markets now. Frankfurt

Frankfurt – with its impressive skyline of futuristic skyscrapers and its historical sites such as the Römerberg square with ruins from the Roman era and timber built houses make it an ideal setting for a Christmas Market visit. Frankfurt can date its Christmas Markets back as far as 1393 but it was only at the start of the 19th Century that the decorated fir tree took pride of place at the Christkindlesmarkt. The Christmas Market in the city centre features a 30 metre Swiss fir tree and some 200 stalls selling traditional handicrafts, toys and Christmas decorations.

Goslar

A unique feature of this Christmas Market are the 40 fir trees, lit up with thousands of lights, soft ground underfoot, quiet music and the enticing aroma of delicious things to eat. Children will enjoy the Christmas Landscape with petting zoo, railway and entertainment in the Advent Marquee.

Göttingen

The Christmas Market activity revolves around the famous Gänseliesel statue in the historic old town. At more than 80 stands visitors can browse through Christmas decorations, wooden toys, glove puppets and a whole lot more. Children will love the children’s roundabout, the historic big wheel and the Advent calendar as big as a house.

Hamburg

Hamburg’s Christmas Markets fill many of the city centre’s squares and offer a choice of atmosphere: historical, Hanseatic or traditional. There are also five traditional ‘fantasy boats’ anchored along Jungfernstieg offering young visitors a pre-Christmas treat. SATURDAY 27th OCTOBER.

After departing Bristol Aiport at 1700 we arrived in to Banjul Airport at 2230 and were transferred to the Kombo Beach Hotel. I stayed in room 410 which was a standard room but very spacious.

The Kombo Beach Hotel grew on me throughout the week and it ended up being one of my favourite properties in the Gambia. It is a fairly lively hotel good for couples of all ages who want a few things going on the hotel. It has an excellent beachfront location with good facillities and great food. Outside the hotel there is a craft market and supermarket, and the bars of Kololi just a short taxi ride away.

SUNDAY 28th OCTOBER.

After an excellent breakfast at the Kombo Beach we headed to the boutique hotel, Coconut Residence. This colonial style hotel has only 22 suites and 4 villas set in impresive grounds. It has taken accommodation and levels of service in the Gambia to new levels and is frequently used by diplomats. The hotel had a very relaxed atmosphere and would suit couples looking for quiet break enjoying a bit of luxury. Although not on the beach they will organise transportation this for you, and is only 1 km for Kololi. The Avocado Restaurant is claimed to be the best in Gambia and is the reason the property is offered on a half board basis.

KOMBO BEACH HOTEL.

The Kairaba was my favourite of the bigger hotels in the Gambia. Set in lovely well kept gardens with a tranquil atmosphere perfect to unwind. There is no loud music played around the pool or pool games. The hotel is prime location set on the beach and the bars and restaurants of Kololi right on the doorstep. Gambia Experience prices are based on the Deluxe Rooms which are in the best location

Hotel Senegambia is largest and best known hotel which is family friendly. I felt the rooms at the property were fairly small and the grounds and outside of the buildings needed a bit of attention. The new pool area down by the beach is really nice and hotel is in a great location next to the Kairaba in the heart of Kololi. A good option for a 3 star property but I would personally pay extra to go up a grade.

At hotel Senegambia they have a daily vulture feeding show where you can watch them eat, shower and dry off.We the drove to Makasutu Nature Forest where we were greeted upon arrival by the resident baboons.

After a short walk we arrived at the dining area in the forest for a refreshing fruit drink before heading to the rivers edge. We then went on a dugout canoe up through the mangrove creeks of the River Gambia, which was very relaxing. After the canoe ride we had a short walk through the forest to a local family whose grandfather is a 95 year old fortune teller.

The luxurious Mandina Lodges are situated in the African bush right on the rivers edge. An excellent base from which to explore the local wildlife and people. With the there being only 8 lodges we didn't get to look inside the lodges due them all being occupied. There is a wonderful pool area and restaurant and would be ideal for a 2 or 3 night stay in conjuction with a beach stay.

THE LUXURIOUS MANDINA LODGES.

At Makasutu they also have a craft market and show how they weave, an indeal oppurtunity to pick up a bargain and give some money to the local people.Makasutu at night is a unique experience where the local people put on a show with local dances and music, you are encouraged to join in. A great night to experience the local culture.

MONDAY 29th OCTOBER.

A day out on the 50 foot catarmaran is a perfect chance to unwind and take in the scenery along the River Gambia through to the Atlantic Ocean. The majestic 52-foot craft offers comfort and space as well as the opportunity to sample the world of catamaran sailing.

Departing from Denton Bridge, coffee is served whilst cruising through the mangroves to reach the River Gambia. The sails will be raised to cross the river to either Dog Island or venture a little further to the Island of Jinnack, just on the border of Senegal.

Fresh dressed lobster is served for lunch with a choice of salads and fresh bread. A wide variety of drinks are available on board and are payable at the end of the day.

Gambia%20Experience%2024Oct%20to%2031%20Oct%202007%20158.jpg

There is a chance to swim along the way and also see the spectacular sight of the dolphins, which alone makes the trip worthwhile.Returning through the creeks, tea and coffee are offered to complete your day.

TUESDAY 30th OCTOBER.

After Breakfast,we visited The Corinthia Atlantic Hotel which is set away from many of the tourist hotels just outside the capital of Banjul. It is set on the biggest beach in the Gambia and has a wide range of sports facilities. There is also a charming bird garden at the property. There are a couple of small restaurants and bars outside the hotel but is mainly suited for a hotel based holiday.

There is little for tourists to do in Banjul, but there are a few restaurants, a very large market where Gambians barter for everyday items. It's worth making a photo stop at Arch 22 which was built to commemorate independence. The next stop is at the National Museum where the collection traces African Culture and European Colonialism.

A drive through the streets of Banjul leads up to Albert Market to experience the hustle and bustle of a market, where you can buy anything from live chicken to fresh vegetables and false hair! (As in any crowded place, please take care of handbags, cameras and other valuables). From Banjul, stopping briefly at the largest mosque in the city, you visit a primary school with the option of visiting a school for the blind.

The Ocean Bay Hotel was a very impressive property which I would thoroughly recommend. It has a great beachfront location set in beautiful gardens, ideal for a relaxing beach break. The rooms are finished to a good standard and are arranged over only 2 floors, there is occasional evening entertainment and there are a few restaurants and bars within walking distance. The highlight of the property is the Ocean Clipper a la carte restaurant with superb ocean views.

THE OCEAN BAY HOTEL.

The Sunbeach Hotel is situated next to Ocean Bay Hotel, so again has a few restaurants and bars within walking distance. It is one of the most popular hotels with families and is more lively than the Ocean Bay. The rooms and single storey and are set throughout the gardens, again a beachfront setting. I personally preferred the Ocean Bay but can see how it appeals to families and couples looking for a more lively base.

My personal favourite was Ngala Lodge with its elevated setting overlooking the ocean. The beach is accessible at low tide for those who wish to use it. It was origianlly a colonial mansion and was very impressive from first impressions.

Gambia%20Experience%2024Oct%20to%2031%20Oct%202007%20278.jpg

THE SUPERB NGALA LODGE.

The rooms were very large, decorated to a high standard and each unique. Although there is nothing within walking distance of the property everything is just a short taxi ride away. Please note the property does not take children under 16 years of age.

WEDNESDAY 31st OCTOBER.

The newest property in the Gambia is the Sheraton Hotel and Spa which is built into the hillside in an isolated spot with a beachfront location. The rooms are what you expect from a Sheraton, finished to a high standard but had a few teething problems. There are many steps and slopes around the property which we found very confusing. The restaurants and bars of Kololi are around 15 minutes taxi ride away.

The Bakotu Hotel is a family run property located near Kombo Beach Hotel. It is deal for anyone looking for a smaller friendly hotel with the beach less than 100 metres away. The rooms are fairly basic with older style bathrooms, please note the rooms don't have air conditioning and is an extra charge. It has a small pool area that is very relaxed and rooms set in the tranquil gardens.

WEDNESDAY 31st OCTOBER.

The most enjoyable part of my trip to Gambia was the 4WD Adventure. An off the beaten track adventure in either an army style truck or landrover which follows the coast of this exciting country and also uncovers the Gambian village way of life. This can be a dusty and bumpy day but it was well worth it.

During the day we had the opportunity to visit some villages and experience the hospitality of the friendly locals. A visit to a village school always proves to be one of the highlights of the day (any contributions of pens, pencils, book etc are always gratefully received by the head teachers). A barbecue lunch was served on one of the unspoilt beaches in the south of the country, followed by the chance to swim and sunbathe.

Gambia%20Experience%2024Oct%20to%2031%20Oct%202007%20348.jpg

SELECT WORLD TRAVEL'S PAUL KNAPPER GOES BACK TO SCHOOL.

In the afternoon we made a further stop at the Tanji Nature Trail which gave us the chance to learn more about traditional Gambian culture. Finally we drove past a typical fishing village before heading back to the hotels.

Unscheduled stops are made to observe the antics of the chattering monkeys and often baboons in their treetop playground. Many exotic and colourful species of birds can be spotted and admired.

This is a wonderful opportunity to experience the real Gambia and enjoy a totally different way of life.

NB Please do not throw sweets, pens or toys from the trucks to the children, this is a dangerous practice that encourages the children to beg and can result in injuries.

South Americas Greatest Trekking Adventure, The Inca Trail

Mr Paul Knapper, Manager of Select World Travel in Church Street, Great Malvern has been selected as one of the few UK Travel Agents to be invited to travel to Peru today (Monday 12th September) to experience one of South Americas greatest trekking Adventures,” The Inca Trail” during the Centenerary year of it’s Discovery in 1911 by Hiram Bingham. It will be a real personal challenge for Paul, as he is afraid of heights.

Permits are needed to Trek the Inca Trail, and a new system has meant during 2011, permits have been a lot harder to secure.

In January 2010, heavy rain caused flooding which buried or washed away roads and railways leading to Machu Picchu, trapping more than 2,000 local people and more than 2,000 tourists, who were taken out by airlift. Machu Picchu was closed temporarily, but it reopened on 1 April 2010

The Inca trail starts at an altitude of about 2,800 metres and traverses the Andes, crossing ‘Dead Woman’s Pass’, which at 4,200 metres is the highest point of the trek, before descending towards the ultimate goal of Machu Picchu (2,500m). Paul Has been doing much of his training with a back pack on the Malvern Hills

In Comparison, Standing near the Toposcope on the highest point of the Worcestershire Beacon on The Malverns, the highest point is 1,395 feet above sea-level

It takes 4 days to reach the Inca City of Machu Picchu and, with the exception of crossing Dead Woman’s pass, much of the trekking is not too demanding and is well within the capabilities of anyone of reasonable fitness and requires no technical expertise.

Some of the Highlights of Paul’s Journey to Peru with Adventure Specialist Operator Explore, will begin in Cusco, the old heart of the Inca Empire and time to acclimatize to the Weather and altitude. On Day 3 the group will leave to enter the Sacred Valley traveling to the market town of Pisac and into The Sacred Valley and the sleepy town of ollantaytambo with a chance to go white water rafting on the Urubamba river.

Day 4 is where the hard work begins leaving early in the morning to go to the Trailhead at KM82 where the trek from Piscacucho leads them through Inca communities along the trail and agricultural settlements before a relatively easy climb to the overnight stay at Huayllabamba approx 5 hours walking later.

On Day 5 is the Trek over Dead Woman’s pass, taking a steady ascent through lush cloud forest to Llulluchapampa and meadowland with stunning views. Then a grueling hike to sort out the men from the boys, up to Warmihuanusqa Pass (4215m or the English name Dead Woman’s Pass) The Climb will taqke most of the morning, but apparently the sense of achievement once you reach the summit is exhilarating. A Steep descent into the Pacamayo valley takes them 600 metres to the second overnight camp after an enduring 7 hours trekking.

On Day 6, A Diverse day with an ascent to to the Runkurakay pass and to the Inca staircase to the pass at 3,900 m offers breathtaking views of Pumasillio and across the Vilcabamba range, continuing past old Inca ruins, Inca stone paths and Tunnels and semitropical cloud forest to the third pass, Phuyupatamarca (Cloud level town) lying some 3,800 m above sea level. If The weather is ggood , the staggering site of the entire Vilcabamba range will be laid out before them.

A White granite stairway-an impressive 1000 metre descent leads to the magnificent ruins of winaywaya, a small Inca city which, like Machu Picchu, was abandoned for unknown reasons. Approx walking 7 hours.

On Day 7 The Climax to the Day, hiking through cloud forest, through forests and ferns, to the famous staircase that leads to the famous Intipunku (Sun Gate) to the first breathtaking views of Machu Picchu. Time to Explore the City, Temples, stairways and Palaces and gabled stone dwellings.

Built in the mid-15th Century by Panchacuti, the city was re-discovered in 1911 by Hiram Bingham, thought to be a major agricultural centre for the Incan Empire: The The City’s very inaccessibility seems to have saved it from the looters of the intervening years,

Having Achieved their Goal, the descent is by Bus and Train from where they return to the small town of Aquas Calientes, from where they return to Cusco Before returning to the UK, the group have time in Lima to explore the contrastys of the City, the colourful markets and El Olivar , a 400 year old olive forest.

On Paul’s return, hopefully with his fear of heights Conquered, Paul and Select World Travel will be inviting Tour Operator Explore to Join them as Part of AITO (Association of Independent Tour Operators) Festival Week during the 1st -15th of October to give a Lecture and slide-show about the biggest adventure Paul has ever experienced. Information and dates will be available after Paul’s return on the 22nd of September on 01684 577007 or by calling into our Travel Agency which is next to Air hairdressers and Schooltogs.

Below are Details of the Full 9 Day Inca Trail Adventure.

Trip Summary

What better way to approach the matchless splendour of the ‘lost city’ of Machu Picchu than along the trails once used by the Incas themselves? This spectacular trek follows the meandering course of the Urubamba River valley under the often snow-capped mountains of the Andes, on a 4-day trek to the site of one of the most spectacular archaeological finds of any age. Those who wish to can also extend their journey with a stay in an Amazon lodge in the heart of the remote Peruvian jungle.

.

Comfort rating:

Simple local accommodation; typically hostels, pensions or teahouses that are clean and comfortable and usually have shared facilities. Alternatively it could be a campsite with showers and toilets, and a support crew to help out with camp chores.

Walking Grades and Fitness

Be Prepared While our intention is to adhere to the day-by-day route printed below, a degree of flexibility is built into the itinerary. Much depends on the elements and other operational factors. Please note: Participation in canoeing, kayaking, or rafting (including white-water) requires that you are able to swim 25 metres unaided.

Strikes, rallies and road-blocks are quite common forms of protest in Peru. While we have excellent resources in place to minimise any disruption to the tour, occasionally we have to make changes to our planned route and/or itinerary.

Please note that rail strikes are common in Peru and so there is the possibility that the train may not always be running. In the event that you have chosen the optional train ride and it is not operating, then we will make the journey from Puno to Cusco by bus, which will include a stop at the impressive Inca temple at Raqchi. Lunch is not included on the bus journey.

Grading is a somewhat difficult topic as much depends on the individual’s own perception of his or her abilities. The following is intended as a general guide to our walking grades.

This tour is rated Moderate to Strenuous Moderate: Involves some longer walks at low altitudes. (4-6 hrs/day, below 3000m). Some previous hillwalking experience is beneficial, but walks should be within the capabilities of those who lead a normal active life. Tours may contain optional strenuous days, and we would advise that you tone up your fitness before you travel.

Strenuous: For the more serious hillwalker and a higher level of physical fitness is required. Walking days can be 6-8 hrs and may involve up to 900m plus of ascent/descent. Be prepared for many consecutive days walking, often at high altitudes, so stamina is very important.

Day 1: Join tour Cusco; PM free

Our journey begins in Cusco, the old heart of the Inca Empire and the archaeological capital of the Americas. The oldest continuously inhabited city on the continent, Cusco is imbued with an atmosphere of mystery and grandeur. The Spanish-style city of today, with its attractive pink tiled roofs, arcaded plazas and steep winding alleyways, stands upon tremendous Inca foundation stones, its links with the Inca Empire everywhere to be seen, from the stone walls that line the city streets, to the museums filled with artefacts and relics of a long dead people. After a chance to freshen up and meet with your tour leader the rest of the afternoon is free to explore at your leisure, perhaps taking in something of the grandeur of the city’s more recent colonial past amongst the churches and galleries of the Plaza de Armas, or perhaps venturing into the ancient Inca heart and visiting the incredible remains of Qoricancha. Overnight Standard Hotel (H+)

Day 2: Transfer to the Sacred Valley and visit Pisac and Ollantaytambo

Today we leave the old Inca capital and head instead for the stunningly beautiful setting of the Sacred Valley, whose rich alluvial plains were so well exploited by the ancient tribes. We’ll travel via the market town of Pisac, strategically located at the head of the Urubamba Valley and then down into the valley to Ollantaytambo. The rest of the afternoon is then free to explore something this sleepy town, perhaps paying a visit to the formidable ruins of its once great fortress, site of one of the very few Spanish defeats during the conquest (optional). It was from behind the imposing walls of this impregnable stronghold that Manco Inca held out against the forces of Hernando Pizarro in 1536, forcing the Spanish to retreat back to Cusco. The town itself also presents a charming setting for an afternoon of quiet wandering, the spectacular ruins and Inca terraces presenting a stunning backdrop to a genteel exploration of its monuments and markets. For the more adventurous there may be an opportunity to experience some exhilarating white-water rafting on the Urubamba River – no previous experience is necessary and all safety equipment is provided.(optional) Overnight Standard Hotel (H+) Included meals: Breakfast

Day 3: Trek to Huayllabamba via Llactapata

Leaving early this morning we drive to the trailhead at KM 82, where we begin our trek from Piscacucho, following the meandering course of the Rio Urubamba as it flows northeast towards the ruins of Llactapata. Once part of an agricultural settlement that supplied the Inca communities along the trail, we’ll pass by the extensive terraces at Llactapata to find ourselves a spot to enjoy lunch amongst the spectacular landscapes. From here we continue into a side valley and begin a steady and relatively easy climb up towards our final destination for the day, the village of Huayllabamba, where we make our first night’s camp. Approx walking: 5 hrs Overnight Wild Camp (C) Included meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 4: Trek to Pacaymayo via Llulluchapampa and the Warmihuanusqa Pass (4215m)

Breaking camp this morning we continue climbing, taking a steady ascent through lush cloud forest towards the open spaces of Llulluchapampa, an expanse of wide meadowland that presents us with some stunning views back down the valley. From here we have another gruelling hike up towards the Warmihuanusqa Pass (4215m), or to give it its English title ‘Dead Woman Pass’! The climb will take us most of the morning, but the sense of achievement once you reach the summit is exhilarating. From here we begin a steep descent down into the Pacamayo Valley and our second camp, lying some 600 metres below us. Approx walking: 7 hrs Overnight Wild Camp (C) Included meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 5: Trek to Winaywayna via the Runkuracay Pass and Sayacmarca

Today’s trekking presents us with our most diverse day, starting with an ascent towards the Runkuracay Pass via the ruins of an old Inca tambo (post house). From here we continue along an Inca staircase up to the Runkuracay Pass (3900m), which affords us some breathtaking views of Pumasillo and across the Vilcabamba range. Then we begin a 2-hour descent down to the haunting ruins of Sayacmarca, overlooking the beautiful Aobamba Valley. Stopping to explore the site, we then continue along an old Inca stone path that takes us through an old Inca tunnel and alongside the lush landscapes of semitropical cloud forest as we make our way towards our third pass, that of Phuyupatamarca (cloud-level town) lying some 3800m above sea level. This is probably the most spectacular stage of our journey today and, weather permitting, we will enjoy the staggering sight of the entire Vilcabamba range laid out before us in all their immense glory. As we begin our descent we pass by the ruins of the old town, quite possibly the most beautiful of all we pass along the trail, and follow a white granite stairway - an impressive 1000 metre descent to the magnificent ruins of Winaywayna, a small Inca city which, like Machu Picchu, was abandoned for unknown reasons generations ago. This stunning setting is the site of our final camp. Approx walking: 7 hrs. Overnight Bush Camping (C) Included meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 6: Trek to Machu Picchu. Full day at site, then bus and train to Cusco

Starting early again this morning we continue hiking through cloud forest, passing through a rich forest of towering trees and giant ferns as we make our way towards the Inca staircase that leads up to the famous Intipunku (Sun Gate), from where we should get our first breathtaking views of Machu Picchu. The rest of the morning is spent amongst these magnificent ruins, probably one of the most astounding feat of engineering in all of ancient America. Temples, stairways, palaces and gabled stone dwellings are scattered everywhere, testifying to the energy and ingenuity of the builders. Not without reason is this site probably the most revered tourist attraction in Latin America. Its location alone is dramatic in the extreme, teetering on the saddle of a high mountain peak that towers above the valley below, its backdrop a blanket of forested mountains. Built in the mid 15th century by Pachacuti, the city was rediscovered in 1911 by Hiram Bingham.Thought to have been a major agricultural centre for the Incan empire, the city’s very inaccessibility seems to have saved it from the looters of the intervening years, resulting in the remarkably preserved ruins that we see today. We will enjoy a guided visit of the site, taking in the major highlights of this vast complex, before descending by bus to the small town of Aquas Calientes, from where we return to Cusco by train. Approx walking: 3 hrs Overnight Standard Hotel (H+) Included meals: Breakfast, Lunch

Day 7: Tour ends Cusco

Passengers on the group flight to London will fly to Lima where there is the included "Lima Detour" - an alternative and unique city tour which will let you see the contrasts of the city, colourful markets and El Olivar (a 400 yr old olive forest) - before flying back to the UK. Included meals: Breakfast

EXPLORE ACCOMMODATION RATINGS:

An important feature of many Explore tours is the wide range of accommodation used, and since the beginning our philosophy has been to select accommodation to suit the itinerary - not the other way round. To help gauge the comfort level on your chosen tour, we have graded the accommodation standards at all night-stops using the rating guide below. Please keep in mind however that standards can vary from one trip to the next, and occasionally we may need to change a night-stop without advance warning.

Hotels / lodges / guesthouses - or similar H++ :

Comfortable hotels, lodges or guesthouses with twin or single rooms and en suite facilities. With air-conditioning/heating where appropriate and with reliable hot and cold water. Generally good levels of service and often with added amenities such as restaurant, bar, gardens or swimming pool.

H+ : Standard hotels, lodges or guesthouses,

usually with twin or single rooms and en suite facilities. These are generally standard, no-frills hotels with adequate amenities and service standards. Whilst comfort levels are perfectly acceptable to most, please don’t expect too much! These are often small, family run establishments.

H : Basic hotels, lodges or guesthouses (also village houses, mountain huts, hotels etc often come into this category).

Accommodation may be communal or dorm-style, and WC / washing facilities are usually shared. Running hot and cold water may be unreliable or even unavailable. These can be the most rewarding and memorable places to stay, but comfort levels are low.

Camping

C++ : Comfortable,

full service camping generally in permanent, fixed camps with walk-in tents, proper beds and often with en-suite facilities and other amenities such as dining area, bar, gardens and a swimming pool. Your bed-linen is provided.

C+ : Standard camping in private or public campsites,

usually with WC and washing / showering facilities in a shared ablutions building. Typically in two person tents, and some level of participation is often required. Generally bed linen or sleeping bags are not provided.

C : Basic camping in wild camps

where facilities / amenities may be limited or non-existent. Generally there is no running water, and we dig a temporary bush toilet. Two person tents are often used, but occasionally we sleep under the stars. Participation normally required and sleeping bags usually not provided.

Note: other accommodation, for example, aboard boats or on overnight sleeper trains is described individually at the appropriate point in the tour itinerary above.

Peru's infrastructure is well developed and it is possible to find anything from a backpacker style hostel to 5-star hotels in the major cities and at all the key tourist destinations. Accommodation and service levels are generally high. We use a mixture of accommodation on our tour In Ollantaytambo we stay in a simple locally owned hotel. Rooms are quite basic but the lovely gardens, great setting and chance to experience small town life make for a very enjoyable stay.

In Cusco we stay in a standard 3 star hotels. Both hotels have en suite facilities and enjoy good locations at the heart of the city to enable you to explore easily.

Whilst on trek we camp wild in two-man tents with plenty of room for bags. At our camps we set up a dining tent and tables and stools are provided. There is also a toilet tent. Due to the nature of the environment, personal washing water is limited. The trek is fully supported by our team of porters. They set up and take down the tents, prepare all the meals, carry all our bags (except daysacs and gear and generally ensure our well-being during the trek. We ensure their wellbeing by adhering to good working practice (see box). Please note there are Solo departures of this tour available on selected dates. Our usual same-sex room sharing applies, unfortunately there is not the option to book a guaranteed single room.

All of our tours are planned and operated on a twin-share basis, meaning that the standard cost is based either on individual travellers sharing accommodation with another group member of the same sex, or people who book together sharing accommodation.

On this particular tour we are pleased to be able to offer customers the option of pre-booking a guaranteed single room. Due to the variety of accommodation used on this tour, single rooms are available for a majority of the nightstops, however it would still mean sharing at Huayllabamba, Pacaymayu and Winaywayna.

Please Contact Select World Travel for single room option prices for this tour.

Climate

Bear in mind that at high altitude temperatures can drop dramatically, and conditions can change suddenly. Inland: Hot and humid from October to March (summer), mild to hot from April to September (winter). Highlands: All year, sunny days, chilly evenings. Rainy from December to March and mainly dry the rest of the year. Coast: June to October, damp and misty, but temperature never drops below 10°C and rain is rare. Additional information and climate charts can be accessed at http://www.explore.co.uk/weather. Seasonal weather patterns can be unpredictable. Up-to-date information on the weather worldwide can be found by following the BBC weather link on this page.

Altitude

Note on Altitude: The trip may be taken by almost anyone who enjoys good health, and appreciates that walking in the Andes is fairly rugged and involves trekking over rough pathways.

Inca Trail Trek (used on Inca Trail Trek tour)

This is the classic Inca Trail Trek. Following in the footsteps of the Incas, we trek to Machu Picchu, fully supported by our guides and porters. At sunrise on the last day we arrive at the Sun Gate entrance to Machu Picchu and after visiting the site, take the train back to Cusco.

The highest point on the route is 4200m – the realm of thin, cold, dry air. We take a day to begin acclimatising. Insurance: Please ensure that your insurance policy covers you to the altitude indicated before you come on tour. If you have Explore insurance, you will be covered to this altitude. Medical Examination: You should visit your GP and specifically mention the maximum altitude the trek reaches, i.e. 4,200m.

Visa Requirements

Please note that flights on the tour may transit through the USA. According to US law, passengers may have to disembark, collect luggage and clear immigration before re-boarding for the onward flight. From 12 January 2009 all passengers travelling to the USA under the Visa Waiver Programme must provide their details online no later than 72 hours prior to travel. British travellers who have not registered before their trip are likely to be detained and sent home. In addition to passport information, you must also supply the full address of your first night’s accommodation in the USA. A complete list of clothing and personal gear is contained in Explore’s ‘General Information Booklet’, available only after a booking has been accepted. Here we make a few specific recommendations with regard to your tour. Luggage One main piece of baggage and a good quality daysac for the trekking days. Total allowance: 44lbs/20kgs. Remember you are expected to carry your own luggage – don’t overload yourself. Your main bag should be lockable as this will be left in storage in Cusco whilst on the trek. The maximum weight allowance for the trek is 7kg only.

Clothing

Pack essentially for ‘All tours’ plus ‘Mountain Treks’. In the highlands conditions are generally dry and sunny during the day but bring warm clothing such as a warm fleece, thermal underwear, warm hat and gloves for cooler nights in the mountains when temps drop dramatically. A complete set of clothes that can get grubby and muddy are useful. Lightweight waterproofs are useful. Bring your swimsuit.

Footwear

Well broken in walking boots are essential and shoes/trainers for relaxing in. For the rafting, old trainers or Teva sandals are best. Equipment Binoculars, torch, water bottle, insect repellent, suncream (at least factor 15), good quality sunglasses and a lip salve with sun protection. You will also need a sleeping bag.

Additional Information for your Trekking Trip

Our trips to Peru feature more mountain walking than many of our other holidays. For this reason we feel that it is of value to provide this extra information sheet to help you prepare for your trip. If you are in any doubt about the suitability of the trip you have booked, call us now. To most people, walking the Inca Trail becomes one of their most memorable experiences. It stands to reason that the better your preparation, both mental and physical, the more you will enjoy yourself.

The Explore ‘General Information Booklet’, together with the appropriate trip dossier, details most of the things you need to know (passports, visas, health care, etc). The purpose of this additional sheet is to be more explicit regarding luggage, packing and equipment.

To enjoy any trek such as the exciting Inca Trail it is essential to be in shape before you arrive. It is not wise to regard a trek as a means of getting into shape or losing excess weight. Start a programme of conditioning well before departure – in fact as soon as you book – and be aware that short walks on the flat do little to prepare you for the gradients of the Andes. Running, hill walking and other more active sports are suitable. The Inca Trail has a great many steps, therfore, step exercises are particularly suitable for preperation fitness.

Luggage: On Trek

Main Baggage: Your main piece of baggage – suitcase, rucksack or whatever, which must be lockable as this becomes the receptacle for anything you don't want on the trek and this is stored at the hotel in Cusco while you are trekking.

Trek Kit Bag: Before leaving Cusco there is plenty of time to re-sort luggage into what you need on trek and what can be left in Cusco (see above). Your trek luggage, including sleeping bag, needs to be packed into a kit bag, soft holdall, frameless rucksack or similar to be carried by the porters. The weight limit for this is 7kg but you will probably find that you do not need this much. Advice on how to pack will be given at the trek briefing. Whatever you take, it must be strong, as porters are not very gentle with baggage. Soft luggage is preferable! Framed rucksacks are unsuitable.

Small Rucksack/Daysac: During the course of a trekking day, you do not have access to the luggage, which is being carried for you by the porters. In any mountain region the weather can change rapidly and you must be equipped for this eventuality. Your daysac should, therefore, be large enough to carry the following: Waterproofs, sweater, long trousers (if walking in shorts), warm hat and gloves, sun hat, sun cream, water bottle (at least 2 litre or 2 1litre bottles), tissues and your packed lunch. Most people normally find that this adds up to about 6kg. Camera equipment can be heavy so think carefully when deciding what to take. Remember to carry spare film/memory cards with you during the day. Other optional items in a daypack might be a diary or a book to read at lunchtime. Something between 20 and 25 litres capacity is probably the most suitable. A shoulder bag is simply not a practical alternative.

Clothing & Footwear: On Trek

Walking Boots: Probably the trickiest part of all. We strongly recommend walking in good boots. Trainers, tennis shoes etc simply do not give the ankle support afforded by a decent pair of boots. Many people now trek in the lighter weight Gore-Tex or leather boots sold under the brand names ‘Karrimor’, ‘Berghaus' or similar and these are usually satisfactory. They have the advantage that they take little breaking in. The slightly heavier traditional leather walking boots are also good. Avoid the types often found in high street shoe shops, which are simply cheap trainers with a higher canvas side sewn on – they give little support and will probably not last the trek. Above all, your boots must be well broken in and comfortable. We do not recommend borrowing or renting boots. It is a good idea to carry your boots in your hand luggage on international flights or wear them – should your luggage be delayed, your well broken in boots are the one thing which will be irreplaceable.

Thermals: Comfortable around camp and much more practical (and warmer) to sleep in than pyjamas.

Trainers or Trekking sandals: Useful around camp, in towns and when travelling. Sandals are ideal for rafting as they protect the soles of your feet and also keep them cool.

Socks: It is best to wear a pair of liner socks under a pair of fairly thick loop stitch socks. This helps to protect your feet against blisters. Avoid nylon socks, they are abrasive, don’t breathe well and can cause blisters. Waterproofs: Breathable waterproofs not only protect against rain and wind but also stop you from overheating. They ‘breathe' and avoid condensation that you will experience from nylon waterproofs.

General Information

Thick sweater/fleece jacket: A thick sweater or fleece jacket is necessary as nights can be very cold at altitude, especially in July. Make sure that your waterproof jacket is loose enough to wear over your sweater or fleece. T-shirts: We recommend polyester/polypropylene fabrics which keep you warm even when wet.

Shorts: Shorts can be very comfortable to walk in but you must carry long trousers with you in case you get either sunburned or cold! Please remember we shall be passing through the occasional remote areas and villages and short shorts (especially on ladies) can give offence to the local inhabitants. Longer looser fitting shorts are, in any case, more comfortable to walk in.

Gloves & Hat: Especially useful around camp in the morning and in the evening at higher altitudes.

Equipment Provided: On Trek

The following equipment list is provided by Explore once you are on the trek:

2-person tents.

Dining tent.

Foam mats.

Stools, table.

All cooking and kitchen gear.

Personal Equipment: On Trek

Trekking poles: Trekking poles are recommended. NB. Metal tipped trekking poles are NOT permitted – in order to reduce erosion – please ensure they have rubber/plastic tips (not available locally).

Sleeping Bag: As you do not carry it yourself this may be down or synthetic, but it must be 4-season. A cotton liner helps to keep your bag clean. You do not need a foam mat as thermarests are provided. It is possible to hire an appropriate down sleeping bag for the trek locally (US$20).

Water Bottle: Water along the trail must never be considered as drinkable. The camp staff provide purified water each day with which to fill your own bottle. 1 litre is the minimum size suitable. Disposable plastic bottles are not allowed on the trail. It is a good idea to add some powdered fruit juice for flavouring. Note: metal bottles can also double up as hot water bottles.

Torch/Batteries/Bulb: A small torch is essential for finding things in your tent, visiting the ‘toilet' in the night etc. Often a head torch is the most practical option as it allows you to have both hands free. Remember that in most developing countries only a limited selection of batteries is available. The most common are pen cells (or AA size) and SP/HP2 (D size).

Toiletries: Try to keep heavy cosmetics etc to a minimum. Essentials are toothbrush/paste, soap and a small towel. ‘Wet Wipes' are great for a quick clean up in your tent, so bring a pack of those (non-perfumed to avoid rashes!).

Personal First Aid Kit: On each trek a first aid kit is carried but you should have your own blister kit, supply of plasters, aspirin etc. (Please do not give medicines to local people without consulting the trek leader.)

Please ensure that you have an up-to-date copy of these trip notes immediately before you travel, as from time to time our itineraries may be amended, either for operational reasons or in response to feedback from customers. You will be informed of any major changes to your tour but small changes may just be added to these trip notes

Please note: 2011 itinerary versions are applicable to tours departing in 2011. 2012/13 itinerary versions are applicable to tours departing from 1st January to 31st December 2012. For tours departing during 2013, itineraries may be subject to change and will be confirmed by the publication of the 2013 brochure/s in Autumn 2012.
